Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Discussion Questions

GUYS THIS ONE IS SOOOOOO GOOOOOOOOOOOD. I think I often just remember what a freak Malfoy is and that this is the one where Dumbledore dies and kind of forget how awesome the rest of the book is! The sass and jealousy and secrecy and layers were particularly awesome to listen to as I drove to school those last few weeks.

At our last meeting the consensus was that we should play Harry Potter Scene It! I’ll be setting up a poll for potential meeting dates soon.

Discussion Questions

1. Let’s just get this out of the way – the teenage love! Were you surprised by Harry’s developing feelings for Ginny? Pissed at how monumentally they screwed it up in the movie? What about Ron/Lavender/Hermione/McLaggen? Tonks & Lupin? Bill & Fleur? (I guess not so teenage). So much LOVE.

2. What did you HONESTLY think about Snape during this book? Did you reserve any faith in him after the opening chapter? What about the last chapter?

3. What does it say about Voldemort and the Death Eaters that he asks 16 year old Draco Malfoy to assassinate the most powerful wizard in the world – his headmaster Albus Dumbledore?

(bad language sorry but it’s too funny not to share)

4. Do you like Slughorn? What do you think of his teaching/mentoring style?

5. If you were to break your soul into 6 extra pieces (besides the piece in your body obvs) what objects would you store the pieces in?

6. The ministry takes a calculated turn from their denial approach to accepting that Voldemort has returned and tries to curry favor with Harry, hoping to make him the poster boy for the effort to defeat Voldemort. Harry tells Rufus Scrimgeour that he is “Dumbledore’s man, through and through.” *sobs* Should Harry have tried to communicate and work with the ministry more?

7.  What did you think about the potions book? Was it ok for Harry to use? Should Slughorn have been able to tell Harry wasn’t doing it on his own? How did you feel when you discovered it was Snape?

prince3

8. As much as I don’t want to, we have to talk about Dumbledore. Personally, I refused to believe he was really dead until they were actually sitting at his funeral. Why was his death necessary? How does it drive the story?

Alright everybody enjoy book 6 and I promise we’ll have another awesome meeting at my place with yummy HP themed treats and great discussion/crying!
